What is a Wood Shredder?

A wood shredder or wood chipper (also called a chipper or shredder) is a mechanical device for shredding residual wood. Wood shredders are used to shred bulky, large-volume wood waste and reduce its volume.

Wood chippers use powerful electric or combustion engines or tractors to drive knife systems or grinders. When an object is fed into the wood shredder, it is broken down into small pieces by grinding, milling, tearing,
smashing, or cutting. The result is called shredded material, wood chips, or wood shavings.


Wood cuttings from trees, shrubs, hedge trimmings, and other bulky garden waste are shredded by the garden chipper or wood chipper into small, quickly compostable pieces. Chipped branches, bark, and twigs are often used to cover beds in winter as frost protection or to slow weed growth. The less green material the material contains, the better it is suited for this purpose.

Which Wood Shredder Do You Need?

Garden chippers come in various designs and power levels, which are used depending on the type and amount of cuttings. The drive is usually via electric motors or gasoline engines (for mobile use), only large machines are powered by connection to the tractor's PTO. There is basically no limit to the branch diameter. Small garden chippers are designed for branches up to 4.5 cm diameter. However, Victory garden chippers can also replace large wood shredders, as they can process wood diameters up to 10 cm quickly with their powerful gasoline engines.

Wood Shredders with Feed Roller and High Discharge

For professional use, wood shredders and wood chippers are often called brush chippers, whose hydraulically driven feed rollers can automatically pull in the fed cuttings and are equipped with a emergency stop bar.

Wood chippers with stronger drives usually have a high discharge, where the chipped material is thrown in a high arc so that it can, for example, fall directly onto a trailer or be spread on a bed.

In small garden chippers, the chipped material usually falls downward or into a container, which often needs to be emptied because a backlog of chipped material can cause blockages.

Blockages or jams can either be cleared by reversing the rotation direction – this only works with a wood shredder with hydraulic feed rollers – or more laboriously by opening the housing. The stronger the suction created by the rotating knife drum or disc in the wood shredder, the fewer blockages can form in the wood chipper.

Wood-poor and moist waste can more easily cause blockages at the discharge opening. Therefore, fir or thuja branches should be stored for 2 or 3 weeks after cutting so that most of the moisture can evaporate.

Second-generation garden chippers feature a high feed chute with an attached funnel, so that pushing in does not lead to hand contact with the knives.

Wood shredders with active feed have a correspondingly longer feed chute. Modern professional wood shredders with self-feed like the Victory BX-72 or BX-102 have emergency stop bars that shut off the drive and block the cutting mechanism as soon as pressure is applied to the edge of the chute. The dangers to be prevented with self-feed models usually consist of bulky branches, thorns, or spikes catching on work gloves or clothing and then exerting a surprisingly fast pull toward the cutting mechanism.


Wood shredders like the Victory BX-52 do not have an active feed mechanism, but the branch material is cut between 36 and 66 times per second depending on PTO speed. Due to this extremely high cutting speed, a feed force is generated that powerfully pulls in most branches. Only larger branch forks require additional pressure from the operator.

 

When you buy a Victory garden chipper with a gasoline engine, a roller cutting mechanism is used. This independently pulls in the branches and cuts them against a counter blade. During self-feed, additional waste can already be collected and fed to the chipper, requiring less time for pushing in.
